Viewer Question Topic:Miscellaneous

I live in south Florida now, but this problem went on in the city we moved
from which is in south Alabama. At this time every year & through the summer
one of my dogs starts the scratching & licking. He licks till there are
sores. By the fall & winter things start to clear up. I know he is allergic
to something he breaths. I myself have allergies & have gotten Rx's from my
doctor to take.
My question is...can I give my allergy meds to my dog? Are there any allergy
meds out there that are safe for my dog? I would like to treat him at home
if possible. We tried the shot route once (& it only helped for a short time
& my vet didn't want to keep giving him shots because they would mess up his
immunte system. I am sure they were some sort of steriod). If I could give
him a pill daily or every other day it would be great. We tried Benedryl as
recommended by our vet, but they didn't help. A Rx med is no problem if I
know which one and how much to give my dog. He weighs in the 60 to 70 pound
range.
I hope you can help Petey. He is suffering.
Thanks-Diane
Hi Dianne in South Florida,
It is definitely not a good idea to give your dog any of your own allergy
medications! Many of these drugs work very differently in dogs and can be
dangerous. Having tried "the shot routine" as you call it, just once, doesn't
really count as veterinary care. There are many excellent veterinary
dermatologists in Southern Florida who could help your pet during his allergy
season. Please consider another thorough examination for Petey. You will both
be much happier with his allergies properly under control. Good luck.
