Viewer Question Topic: Rescued or Abused Dogs

We adopted an abused 6th month old female St Bernard just two weeks ago. She is not the one we originally were to get, that one was only 3 months old and I was sure I could handle her. This one however is much stronger than I am and is intimidating for her 10 year old owner to be. She is house broken, but that is all. She responds to NO commands. Can you give me any ideas on where and how to start with her. I am not ready to give up on her yet. I really want to make this work. Thanks, - Sherard

Anytime we deal with an abused dog, we have to tread lightly. Your problem is highlighted by the fact this dog is very big and there is a child involved. In cases like this, I like going the all-positive route. Use lots of treats and toys and softly teach her to SIT and pay attention to you and your child. Instead of using negative corrections, I would prefer to redirect the dog's attention and energies. You should seek out a local trainer who is upbeat and is well versed in positive methods such as clicker' training. I would shy away from anyone intending to use compulsion, or force, training with a huge, abused dog living with a child. Good luck, take it easy with the big girl.
