I have a bit of a dilemma. Jack likes to pick up the kids toys
and chew on them--NO GOOD!! But when he lets me take them out of his mouth
before they are chewed on he's good??? Should I praise him for
giving up the toy, or should I scold him for taking the toy in
the first place? Keeping toys picked up used to work but Jack will go into
the toy box and help himself. I try to keep the door shut, but boys will be
boys and they forget too. Help!! - Smoke Buster
Dogs associate any re-enforcement (positive or negative) with the act
IMMEDIATELY preceding the re-enforcement.
When Jack gives up a toy (a good thing) - he needs to be immediately rewarded
(positive re-enforcement). However, he may just learn to take a toy and give
it to you for a reward. To combat this, put him on a leash and allow him near
some of the target toys. When he shows interest in one, snap back on the
leash and place him in a SIT. Repeat until he shows no interest. When he
does quit, praise him and give him one of his toys. Do this often and don't
give up.
