Prevent
Every time a dog does something, it reinforces to itself that it can do it. Worst, it also reinforces to itself that it should do the act. The next 4 tips are designed to prevent some of the mayhem you may experience.
exercise, exercise, exercise
A root cause of many problems stem from an over-rested, high energy excitable dog interacting with pre-occupied, tired people. If you're expecting company, take the dog out for a long walk. Play games with the dog - practice obedience. When you come home from work, spend 5 or 10 minutes tossing toys. Hard, fun obedience is a good way to quickly tire out your dog.
Use the Leash
The leash allows you to fully control the dog. Don't be afraid to use it indoors. If you think the dog might start to get out-of-hand, use the leash to put the dog in a sit or down position.
Praise the Good
Anytime and every time you notice your dog acting good, toss in a "good dog". If you see your dog chewing a bone, laying in its corner, sitting by you - tell it how much you appreciate it (do this softly so as not to key up and excite the dog).
Use the "Watch Me"
Toss in a "watch me" before the dog acts up. This is a great exercise for your guests to try.
