Viewer Question Topic: Dogs Eating Strange Things

Bif, Maybe you can help with a problem I am having with my boxer. I got Smacker when she was 8mths old (she is now13mths) and she has two very bad behaviors. 1.) Smacker eats her feces. Not all the time it goes good for a couple of weeks than I will catch her. She tends to do it in the morning. I feed her a cup of dry in the morning a cup and a half with a quarter can of wet food at night. 2.) If it is a plant or a tree she dismantles it! Smacker will rip the limbs off of trees and shrubbery. Uproots any and all plants in the yard and in the house. She digs the bulbs or roots up and brings it into the house. I have owned dogs for over 20 years and never owned a dog who has done either of the above behaviors. What should I do? - Jean

Hello Jean, There are additives for the food that are available at pet stores that make poop taste bad (sounds redundant!), you can try them, or maybe change foods (ask your vet). As for her landscaping hobby: I don't know how big your yard is, but we got our first dog to stop barking at airplanes overhead by using a turkey baster (essentially a big squirt gun), filled with cold water from an upstairs window. He didn't know where it was coming from but whenever he started his bad behavior he got water in the face. If that won't work take him to obedience classes and make sure he knows that landscaping is unacceptable.
