Viewer Question Topic: Housebreaking / Marking
Hello,
I am writing this letter in despare . I am from Athens Greece. I am a owner of a 3 yer old papillion dog who
due to my work obligations usually stays indors in my apartment.
Although taking him out only twice a week , I give him my full attention when I am at the house .
The last year or so , he has started peeing everywhere! At all corners of the house , my clothes , the bed , the toilet , truly on everything he
can pee on , even on my stereo! . I have tried altering this behaviour by force but there is no cure! The thing is that he knows he is doing a
bad thing because the moment I find out , before taking any action he hides under the sofa. What do you propose?
- Anthony
Taking him out twice a week? This is not sufficient! If this is really the most you can do, find him a more dog friendly home. I'd pee all
over too! He needs 3 walks per day minimum. He cannot hold it in all day.
Rewards are great for motivation, and confine him in a crate when he is indoors unless you are not there (on leash for a while!). Don't leave
him in the crate for over four hours at first. Start on a weekend, when you are around. Get him used to the crate. Housebreaking training is
essential. Go slow, and don't punish him. Like you said, he knows it's bad!
