Viewer Question Topic: Biting

I have a problem, I have a Sheltie and he has a biting problem. He has bit 2 people, one of them twice. I have looked through everything I possibly can, to find out what to do and how to keep him from biting people. We used to take him everywhere with us to try and make him more socialized since we got him at the pound. I will have to get rid of him if we can't solve the problem what do you suggest? -Anonymous

The first thing you need to do is fine the cause: - Is he a feat biter? - What is triggering him? What happened right before the bite? - Is he aggressive towards everyone, or only strangers? - Why was he given up to the pound to begin with? - How old is he? - Is he being protective? These questions you may or may not be able to answer yourself. You may need a good trainer to help answer them. Next, you will need to work with that trainer!! - Has he had any obedience training? - How are your controlling him so far? - Was he on leash when he bit? - Was there any warning? (Snarling, raised hair on his neck or back, growling, etc...) - Was food involved? It's difficult to suggest an answer to your question without knowing more information. Addressing the above issues should get you pointed in the right direction, however.
