Viewer Question Topic: Dogs With Children

Dear Bif, My husband and I are expecting a baby in February. I am very concerned how my two canine children will adjust. I have an 11 year old Yorkie and a 2 year old Cock-a-Poo. I hope to prevent major behavioral problems. Do you have any advice on making this transition as smooth as possible. - skaiser

Congratulations on the new baby! Doggie intros to new babies are hard to predict. February is not far away, but try to get the dogs socialized with small children as much as possible. Traditionally, many toy breeds are not the best with children. This is not to worry about if you are careful. Usually, a dog will gain the needed respect for the child when it sees how gently you handle the baby. Make sure the dogs have no access to get to the crib and gradually introduce them. You MUST monitor the dogs with the child at all times.
