Viewer Question Topic: Dogs Greeting People
Hi,
I have a 4 month old labrador retriever (Hudson) which my wife and I
purchased at approximately 9 weeks old. Hudson is extremely friendly
and outgoing to all strangers but is hesitant to come to both of us; his
owners. Additionally, when we come home from work, he does not get
excited, wag his tail, or come to us.
We have never hit him. We play with him and obedience train him in a
friendly manner. The only thing I can think of (unless this is normal?)
is that we tended to say (not scream) at him "No" very frequently
whenever he mouthed us, chewed furniture, etc
Can you help be explaining if this behavior to us is normal; if not, why
it is happening and what we can do?
I would greatly appreciate a response
thanks.
- Paul
Hi Paul, He may expect disapproval when you get home because of chewing problems, obedience issues, etc... . Start working with
rewards instead of "NO" to help encourage him to come. At first bribery is fine. Cheese is very tasty (little bits). Give a piece
to him every time he comes when called upon arrival at home, plus offer verbal encouragement! This doesn't sound like your
average Lab puppy - but just a harsh word at the wrong time can give him the idea to avoid that situation next time. This can
very quickly turn into a habit. I suggest more bonding, loving, and play time. Try group training classes, also.
He needs to realize that you are very glad to see him!
