Viewer Question Topic: Scared / Nervous Dogs

Hi Bif, I have been doing rescue for many years and have never had a dog that I could not teach obedience to or socialize properly, no matter what the circumstances it came from, were, until now. I have been working with a wonderful Neapolitan Mastiff boy that came into the program at 14 months of age. He was very friendly towards me and my hubby(who works the the dogs also) in the beginning. Within one week, Kiko decided that he didn't like men. I could understand if he had been abused, but this was not the case for Kiko. Kiko loves women and children even gets along with other male dogs, but will not accept a man's touch. My husband adores Kiko and works daily to try and make friends, but it does no good. Infact, if I go to the dog shows out of town, I have to take Kiko with me, because he will not let hubby feed him, crate him, kennel him or walk him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. - TeddiN

HI Teddi. I'm not sure why he would get less friendly toward your husband over time. Usually (even if abused and man shy) the confidence builds instead of falling off. Does he act scared, aggressive or both? Toward the husband or all men? This is a big dog, maybe your hubby crates him in a different way then you do. I think we need more background info. Has any other dogs reacted different to him than you? are there any medical problems or other communicational/training problems? Give me more information and I'll try to find out a solution. Write Back Please!
