Viewer Question Topic: Jumping
I have a very energetic Aussie pup who just turned 10 months old. She learns
quickly, but is still bad about jumping up. I have done the knee to the chest,
turned away (then sometimes, she jumps up to my back), scolded, and she still
does it. She knows "lay down" and "sit" and "speak" and "give me your paw,"
but doesn't always come when I call her either. If she knows I'm about to
leave, or if she might have to be tethered, she won't come. Any suggestions?
I usually use positive rewards for her and she is never put in her crate as
punishment. IN fact, that is where she eats, so she associates it with
sleeping and eating.

Ok Judy, OBEDIENCE CLASSES!!! She needs the formal supervised training lessons. Come on Command and corrections for jumping. She also needs to be greeted down at her level. She just wants attention and scolding is attention. You can try keeping an empty soda can with 10 to 15 coins in it. Keep it out of her reach ( by the door) and ONLY shake it when she jumps on you. Then say Hi and give her love when she's down. Timing is crucial, don't over do it. She only hears it and ducks when her paws hit you. Any more and you will just make her nuts! She also has tons of energy at this age so play hard with her pull toys and direct that energy in a good way. Training, training, training! Have fun!
