Viewer Question Topic: Housebreaking / Marking

I have a Lhasa-apso about five years old . my problem with him is he will not stop messing in the house. I've tryed the standard routine of rubbing his nose in it and spanking him to know avail. Sometimes i see him waiting outside with great anticipation to come inside to do his business. If this was not so frustrating it would be comical. help me! - Heidi

Dear Heidi, You may have to go through the entire house-breaking lesson process again. you need to crate train this dog. When he wants to come in to poop, he goes straight into the crate. No "free" time. No opportunity to go inside and when he goes outside always have him on a leash (for now).He gets rewarded immediately for squatting outside! Only give him free time right after going (messing) outside. Then back in the crate. Keep liverworst in small bite sized pieces in a baggy in the freezer ( not so gross and messy to handle). Get them and have them in your pocket before he gets out of the crate for walks ( on a leash). your first few times may be a waiting game, he wants to be inside to go and you cannot give him that chance. start on a day that you have some time. Give him a big meal and crate him for five minutes. Then outside with liver treats and great praise if he goes. If not, back in the crate another ten minutes and then back outside. Keep it up. When he goes outside then he gets a little playtime and then back in the crate. Until he gets the idea don't give him any chance to mess inside. Set a schedule to keep and give him more freedom as is warranted by mess in reliably outdoors and gradually replace treats with praise, only after he seems to "get it". Good Luck.
