Viewer Question Topic: Aggressive / Dominant Dogs

Dear Bif; My husband and I operate a small business out of our home. We have recently hired a helper who is terrified of dogs (we have 3). One of our dogs "Shep" looks ferocious but is really a baby. However I think he senses our helpers fear of him and is playing it up. Although our helper has been here for a month now, Shep is still acting strangely toward him. Today when he came out of the washroom Shep barked at him as though he was about to attack. Luckily I was in the hallway and able to tell Shep "NO!". I then made him stay "in the corner" while I finished up my work in the hallway. It seems that if either my husband or I are with the helper Shep is ok. But if he goes to another room to get something, or the washroom, Shep acts out. I understand that Shep is protecting his territory, but how do I teach him that the helper is here to help and not harm? Perhaps I should mention that Shep is a 6 year old neutered Shepherd cross. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am about at the end of my rope. Thank you in advance. - Alison

Dear Alison,

I think Shep is really just playing the tuff guy in response to this workers fear. As the worker gets used to him and ignores him/sees him as friendly, this behavior will change back to "nice dog". One method is to have the helper carry around some dog treats with him. Teach the helper to tell shep "sit and shush" and he gets a yummy and a pat on the head. Both of you need to go through this with the helper several times. Then shep will see him as a house member and friend and the helper will get less afraid of the dog.
