Hi Biff,
I have a 1 year old spayed Golden Retriever. She used to be very good with
other dogs but we have just moved to a new state and from a house to an
apartment. I have noticed she doesn't do well with other dogs now. She shows
some aggressive behavior to other dogs. She showed her teeth to a pit-bull
Rottie mix. I'm sure it doesn't help that I was in a bad dog fight when I was
a child and I am scared to death when dogs come over to her. I'm not sure
where to start. I did try obedience class but there were two very aggressive
Rotties with muzzles on. My GR has gone through two obedience classes before we
moved and she has her CGC so I know she can be a great dog. I'm just not sure
where to start.
Thank you,
- Heidi
Heidi, Congrats for your Goldie getting her CGC (Canine Good Citizen Certificate) in her first year, that's great! The aggressive behavior you report seems to be a defensive reaction to a perceived threat. She's picking up your fear of scary dog fight encounters and protecting you from all these new dogs. Hardly the way Goldie is usually supposed to act. Both she and you need to socialize with ones that you are not scared of at all, this is the key. Encourage more friendly intention with familiar, non-scary dogs. When you and her are not as worried in meeting familiar, friendly and bigger dogs. It also helps to go out and meet the new neighbors' dogs. Make sure they are nice, and then let the dogs meet on neutral territory when you will not be afraid. so hopefully she won't either. take it slow. Good Luck. Bif
