For Dr. Milwicki: Spay/Neuter
Dear Dr. Milwicki:
I have a question I been wanting to ask you. I have a four year old
cockapoo male. We've been thinking about getting him neutered but have
been wanting to know if we should or not. I've heard it will calm him down
and he won't bark as much. I think this is good if it is true because he
seems to get really frisky and humps my stuffed animals. I also don't know
if it will prevent prostate cancer. Is getting my dog neutered necessary?
Please write back soon.
Thanks-Spring
Hi Spring
Like most veterinarians, I believe it is beneficial to have your dog
neutered. The only obvious reason not to do so would be if he were to be used
for breeding purposes. As a rule, neutering does calm the dog down somewhat
and, since it causes the prostate gland to shrink, there is no further risk
of prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). By properly regulating his diet
and exercise, he should remain fit, trim and healthy. Good luck
